>in order to become strong
That's a very unusual goal with those films and books. Strong in which way?
Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter I own I've read it. It was very cutesy but definitely not close to what I enjoy.
>I feel the same way about dark, macabre art the way you do about serene
That's hard to tell without going deeper into the hows and whys. I think what I mostly get inspired by can be grouped under "interesting" - unusual stuff that you rarely get to see in every day life. "Relaxing" would be the antipode of what excites me.
I also took jobs in a hospital when I was an adolescent. I saw surgeries and accidents. In my town there were numerous abandoned places which I regularly explored and only much later photographed when I was old enough to be trusted with a camera. Diseases and ruins are usually associated with the dark and macabre which is why it's one place I get drawn to. But I also enjoy magic realism like Shaun Tan and the visionnaires Gerard Trignac, Mohlitz, and Poumeyrol.
