We don't entirely disregard dreams as illusions do we? In psychology they play an important role. Why can't the same be done with psychedelics?

Psychedelics are drugs, but the term "drug" is too wide of an umbrella. "Drug" lumps psilocybin (mushrooms) with heroin, and common perception lumps marijuana with heroin, which is outrageous, they produce entirely different results in how they interact with the body and mind.
It's also important to note that "drug" includes nicotine, alcohol, prescription drugs, caffeine. Arguably, serotonin and dopamine are both drugs, as they alter the brain/your experience. So your brain can be said to be drugs, or a stew of drugs in a sense.

Personally I haven't used a psychedelic. Would like to, but set and setting are important, and their illegality would most likely have me paranoid the whole trip.

Alan Watts and others around that time, Tim Leary, Ram Dass, etc., (the way I understand it) envisioned a world with centers where people could have a safe/regulated setting to take psychedelics, under supervision. It's an attitude towards them totally different from the "lets trip our balls off and watch cartoons" perception that I think the war on drugs has convinced most people of.

But at least perceptions are finally changing on cannabis.
