Hey, /lit/. I'm learning English at the moment. Yesterday, the teacher gave us the task of summarizing a short story which he had given to us priorly. We are to pay special attention to the main character of the story, called M., and his experiences with the English language. The following is my introductory sentence to the summary. I'm not sure if I should use the present perfect or the simple past.

M.'s first contact with the English language has been reluctant
M.'s first contact with the English language was reluctant.

I'm inclined to use the present perfect, because the matter of the issue is important for the summary, not the time frame in which it happened, yet somehow it seems wrong to me. I can't use simple present because M. had multiple contacts with the English language other than this first one. One top of that, the first contact happened before the beginning of the short story.

P.S.: Thinking about it some more, both options seem incorrect in their own right.

This is me, to be for real. I don't really understand Pynchon on anything deeper than the surface level. I like him because the stuff that happens in his books are wacky and crazy, and on a page-to-page basis what he's writing is just entertaining to me. Plus, his writing is really really good, some passages just sound really cool when you read them out loud. I don't really know anything about the 'themes'. If you asked me what Gravity's Rainbow was really about I'd say it was a criticism of the evolution of war post WW2 and a commentary on the environment of the cold war.

I've still read a lot of his books, though, and he's one of my favorite writers.

You're only saying that because suffering exists, though. Isn't this just a shitty excuse to rationalize your suffering? You're only able to say this because a life with suffering is the only life you know.
