What are your thoughts on him and his views on literature?

Any favourite books of his?

Someone please explain how Harold Bloom chose his picks for the western canon. I've read his book The Western Canon (the first and last chapter and the parts about authors I take the most interest in), watched basically all of his interviews online, and he seems to value aesthetic and intellectual value over ideological, ethical, ethnical, or any form of identity based quality.

But if I wanted to go about defending the canon, I'm left with a paradox. Bloom made a list in the back of his book The Western Canon and said he regrets making it, and tried to get it pulled, successfully only in a couple of cases. I don't see why he tried to get it removed, personally. Sure he may have missed some stuff, but I love reading the amazing selection he gives in the back of the book. The only problem is I'm not sure what the exact criteria for aesthetic and intellectual value would be, and I've tried to look this up multiple times.
