Does reading up on stuff like this help found a solid foundation in reading philosophy, or is it still necessary to go through the major thinkers in chronological order meticulously.

[Inspired by a thread that got deleted in which everyone said that it's necessary to study the Greeks for 15 years before moving on, which seems a bit crazy to me since this sort of thing doesn't come about in literature, history, art, or anything else I can think of. Nor I believe anyone really does that much work before reading stuff by Heidegger or Wittgenstein - even if they have in phDs in philosophy.]

Do you mean Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder? If so, I agree that would be a good choice. Though that sort of book counts (as it is not a philosophy book, but a book about philosophy books), I'd also suggest the pic-related book.

Reading this serves as a pretty fucking solid guide of recommended reading in the various fields/movements of philosophy.

I recommend reading this so that you have a better sense of the context in which other stuff you read was written in.
