I’m reading Meditations and I find myself disagreeing with some of the things Marky boy says. Particularly the stuff about being a functioning active member of society, submission to the state, service to the state, etc. It seems to me that his views on this type of stuff are a little tainted by him being an emperor and all. This line for example stood out to me, it’s not necessarily about civic duty but it does highlight this absolutist type of view he holds about being useful to the state.

The word dissension stands out to me in particular since it makes it sound like he’s not making a philosophical argument here but instead simply trying to maintain order over his kingdom.

Thoughts? Not just on this specific quote but in general.

No stoic I even spoke to, or read a book of, has made a consistent logical argument as to why duty and virtue are the reasons to live.
Cynicism makes absolute sense and I found it logical. Having said that, stoicism comes from cynicism but has no logical consistency.
Is there anyone here, who can explain stoicism, it can't be rocket science?
