What happened to Gogol after volume 1 of Dead Souls? Volume 2 is nowhere near as good. All of a sudden he stops making fun and only instructs you on how to be a good hardworking friend of the governement.

Why do people wail about Dead Souls being an unfinished masterpiece when it was clear that Gogol was unable to finish his epic with anywhere near the quality of volume 1?

I'm roughly 4/5 through, isn't this book supposed to be depressing? So far it's just a bit gloomy at times but nothing too bad.
