That is precisely the case. Your authority comes from your capacity to generate revenue for the client, but most clients have absolutely no idea how much money you can make them or why they should cut you a check for the privilege of getting to consult you or allowing you to control a (potentially) very important aspect of their business. This is where sales actually comes in.

In your case, as a freelancer, it's extremely important to master three techniques called accusation auditing, labeling, and mirroring. Chris Voss book goes into all three.

The first, because your client has apprehensions about you, what you do, and how much you're worth, and these need to be addressed by you so that they can remain under your control. The second and third because they're fundamental sales negotiation techniques and you cannot be successful socially without them.

Now, the problem with business consulting or working freelance is this: many clients do not actually care that much about money, many of them literally just assume they're going to be successful because they're either delusional, narcissistic, or have been successful in another domain of business and presume they'll be so again - sometimes all three at once. Sales as a skill will help you overcome a great deal of the pitfalls that are concomitant with social interactions with these people.
