Can we all agree that Constance Garnett translation is the best?

Posted this thread already yesterday without the result I was hoping for so I'm trying again. Anyway, the sole purpose of this thread is to get your opinion on the symbolism/meaning behind certain places, actions, concepts, characters and so on. Pick any you like and just ramble a bit about them. I guess this is a CaP general thread.

> the Hay Market

> Raskolnikow's desire to "fight" (taunting Porfiri, Sametow etc. while talking, escaping "traps")

> Which exact role does suffering play?

> Christianity

> Lisaweta

> Of which nature is the change Raskalnikow's experiences at the end?

> In how far are Raskalnikow's motives relevant and at what is Dostojewski hinting at in a more general sense with them?

> Swidrigailow

> Sofja/Awdotja

> The attempted suicide of the girl (Afrosinja) that threw herself of a bridge.

> Raskolnikow's dead bride

> the decline of Katerina and Semjon Marmeladow

If you have anything that you'd like to address or to have addressed feel free to type it out.

What did you take away from this? With Brothers K, I remember I kept thinking of it for like a week after finishing, but for C&P I just finished with an "oh ok". I can recognize the depth and how well formulated it is, and I can even relate to Raskolnikov, but it just doesn't stay in my mind. I'd like to hear other perspectives.

>Part 5 Chapter 5
Is this the peak of 19th century literature? I should just stop reading there, it won't get better than that. I'm glad I didn't dropped it, when Rodion lied in his bed for 70 pages.

Is this book an assualt on analytic philosophy or am I misreading it? Im on part 5 right now, and it seems like the major theme is that rational thinking and logic is completely removed from human nature and will lead you to bad ideas. (Ex. You can come up with a completely logical and rational reason to murder a pawnbroker but it doesnt mean its the right thing to do). What are your thoughts?

Btw I dont care about your own personal opinions on analytic philosophy or morality, Im just looking for input on what Dostoyevsky was trying to convey.

>"What, they are interrogating her debtors!?"

>"Anyway, I heard the police are onto something."

>"From what I've heard someone reported a suspicious person"

It's really getting tedious at this point. The beginning was really slow, but build up to something great with the peak being his second dream shortly after the murder and the interaction afterwards, that was just fantastic. But he's lying sickly in his bed for 48 pages now and I can't take any more pages of what I described in the green. I'm at page 220 now, please tell me that it picks up real soon, at least introduce Marmeladow or something, because at this point it's just plain tedious to read.

I'm new to literature and just finished this and wanted to talk about it. Here are some of my observations

>prose is functional, never really poetic
>philosophy and ideas are in dialogue (mostly), not from narrator's observations
>pacing is 10/10. Events lead into each other naturally and the subject of the narration is never uninteresting
>emotional moments are paced to be every 1-2 chapters. you can't read more than 30 pages without coming to some sort of emotional moment
>every character is given strong traits and characterization is very important

It feels to me like, above anything, it's a very well-designed story. The way that events and characters tie together feels more natural than any other story I've ever read, and it has the effect of a constant stream of emotional moments. It's really impressive, and it's interesting that other books seem to focus more on the style/prose and less on actually making the story interesting. Because it's not focused on style, it seems like the sort of thing some /lit/ posters would call pleb, but it's part of the western canon and it still focuses on ideas and philosophy as much as story. I guess I just don't understand the fetish of style
