Self-help books in general are rightfully deserving of mockery, but 12 rules for life is kind of a meme book/gateway book into what some on the more liberal end of the ideological spectrum conceive of as the "frustrated virgin to literal nazi pipeline". Therefore it is a natural target of ridicule for anyone who wants to make their own ideological allegiance to the left side of things clear in a non-controversial (among lefties) manner, just like rightwingers dunk on meme books like Capitalist Realism because it's similarly an accessory and introduction to what many on the right perceive of as the "internet lefty to schizoid tranny" pipeline.

I know what you mean by this, but I can't help but wonder if they truly are different enough from other lefties to be called the "alt-left". From what I've seen, it's just the same lukewarm '68 leftism that has been around for decades but with a glaze of alt-right-like rhetoric of subalternity and irreverence on top of it (which tends to feel really phony when put in service of defending things people are forbidden from criticizing anyway and which is completely free of any danger of social and political alienation). The alt-right in a wider sense represents a much more marked break from the post-WW2 right-wing tradition than the alt-left does from the '68-er generation's shambling, zombie-like spirit.
