I heard a story about people in pakistan who have to make 4 trips to a well everyday to haul water.

Even getting a better plastic jerrycan for carrying water makes these peoples' lives appreciably less back breaking and burdensome.

And they probably pull their own plows too.

Why wouldn't you want enlightenment?

It's easy to say everything is terrible in modernity when you have clean water, a roof, clothes, heating , AC, TV, internet, books, music, and a full belly. When neither you nor your children or siblings are threatened with beatings, torture, rape, and death everyday.

But for those people who don't have these things, they want modernity. We need more modernity not less. The problem with liberalism is it's incompleteness,

Yes, we need to find our way morally in the west. And perhaps some material poverty could help us with that, to an extent. But I don't want to be cold, hungry, or a serf, so I don't want all modernity to go away.
