No pastime is useless as long as you have a reason for doing it but there are more valuable pastimes than others. Playing video games or watching TV isn't useless because you enjoy it, but you're often not learning much beyond that show or game or its medium by doing it. There's stimulatory gain, a more complex show is more valuable than a simple show even if you enjoy both equally; wasting 100 hours on strategy game is more valuable than 100 hours on a gatcha game. Books educate and stimulate—they're a valuable pastime. You should do what you want but it's good to understand the value of your options. People say why play video games or watch movies when you could be using that time to learn a language or make money, but what's the point in life if you don't get spend leisure time in ways you please? It's important to live in an enjoyable way while spending your time valuably.
