Why did Hemingway wait until the '60s to kill himself? He should've killed himself before he wrote this book, because it's shit. How is this considered some kind of classic?

15 chapters into this. It's quite "fun" but I don't see why Hemingway is held in such high regard. Maybe it's because I haven't read his other works yet but For Whom the Bells Tolls feels very pulpy.

I'm about 130 pages into Hemingway's For Whom The Bell Tolls. What's up with all the thous, thys, and thees in this novel? I had thought we were way beyond that in English language when this book was written. Secondly in the scene where the fascists are thrown off the cliff everyone in the drunken mob is saying things like "I spit obscenities in your father's milk." Do the Spanish not have swear words or something?

Dat ending. Poor Anselmo.

Also, I have read The old man and the sea (which would be anselmo's life if he had lived), What should I read next? (From hemingway and from other authors, but mainly for hemingway)

Man pursues duty,
enthralled by Spanish beauty,
both worth fighting for.

Just finished this little diddy.

While you know how it is going to end from the start, did any one else rage at the ending? I cried manly tears.
