Just saw this and had to think of this phrase: "Form follows function"
That's how I think of magic and magic objects.
Why do magicians use staves as tools for their spells? Because staves are universal tools. Why do rings give you power over elements or people? Because rings are often used as symbols of power. Why incantations to work magic? Because words create meaning and magic has a logic of its own.
I think magic should take the form of something that already relates to the purpose of the magic. Not some stupid empty glow with no inherent meaning or laserbeams.
