Can brands/ product placement be included in stories/ literary work "for free" without issues?

Its a little hard to find answers to legal questions like using X things in art. For example, if I wanted to use an X type of beer repeatedly in something, would that be a legal issue or nonissue since its usually the brands that pay to get included in things? Does anyone here know of a place for knowledge like this?
