If you want a real book about God and the spiritual, I would suggest something simple. Choose the "Sayings of the Desert Fathers" and read the Four Gospels.

Many people have their own ideas of the spiritual and are very big egoists in reality, as a result they write and recommend inaccessible works, on the pretense that they understand them. In reality the closer you are to God, the more you will find that you revolt against complex, turgid, boring prose and ideas.

I tend to think that it is more important to hear confessions from saints than to hear any number of imbeciles go on about the wrongness of such and such. The reason is that everyone makes being a Christian appear easy when they want you to be impressed with them, but if you try, you discover that it is hard. This mismatch is disappointing.

So please read the Desert Fathers; a book of self-admitted alcoholics and fornicators, and their personal struggle to be saints. These men don't pull any punches about themselves, so they are faithful guides and it is a pleasure to read their stories.

Not a book, but read the collected stories and sayings of the Desert Fathers. It's one of those what I read/ what I expected/ what I got kind of things. You think it will be really dry, but then you get casual racism, insults, violence, drunkenness, dwarves, miracles, and you wish you knew people that cool by the end of it.
