You wait, step back, think about it, and then you look it over again.

Great poetry takes time. Horace famously wrote poems, then waited TEN YEARS before he released them to the public. He would spend that decade looking them over, editing them, and refining them. Alexander Pope spent FIVE years on a poem before he would release it.

Obviously these are extreme cases. But they're not bad examples of the idea that great poetry takes time. You have to give yourself distance to brood over a poem. You have to put it away at least for a little while, then come back to it so that you can look at it with somewhat fresh eyes.
