How do I write good dialogue? I've tried everything. I've listened to peoples conversations. I've spoke the dialogue outloud. I've done nothing but read fiction and nonfiction on writing but it's barely helped. I've written out the characters and outlines in depth but the stuff that comes out is just embarrassingly cringe. It's not even a case of writing bad until it's good it's just irredeemable trash. It might stem from me being socially inept I'm not sure. Is there any miracle cure for bad dialogue?

What is the first thing you think of before writing a story? I usually tend to think of a larger theme I want to express and then think of characters and a plot to accomplish that. Does anyone think of characters and plot first?

Is it even possible to make a living from writing anymore?

>have something unique to say? well it'll be too unfamiliar to readers so we won't even bother publishing it
>have social media buzz and/or presence? great we'll publish your book that will collect dust on store shelves or maybe be purchased by two people a week (nationwide)
>want to take full control and self-publish on Amazon? okay have fun standing out in an ocean of $.99 trash

When I think of writing as a job I don't think of some romanticized, imaginary lifestyle living in Brooklyn and being a socialite that spends $5000 a week on luxury items. I get that books have not been profitable in a long time and I'm not wanting to strike gold with Twilight or 50 Shades. But what's the point of even trying when the only venues are guaranteed to bring in absolutely nothing?

Has anyone on /lit/ achieved any real success?

I treat all of my books with great care, especially the Penguins. I have read two from that shelf and am working on a third. (You) can't tell the difference between read and unread.

Oh yes, either I'm clearly an idiot for not liking him, or am completely unaware of European history. Let me break this down for you:

1) If you think that there isn't a grave semantic and referential issue in his writing, I'd argue that you are the idiot. For real, get on track with his videos, podcasts, interviews (anywhere he makes an interaction with another human being) and you'll see the needless semantic mess he makes out of all his topics. A big issue is that his ideas are virtually non-arguable, seeing as how he'll start parading about how you're ideology is affecting your understanding of the world and of his ideas, which ends with an emperor's new clothes sort of argument, kinda like yours. I want to point out, so as to not get your brain in a tangle, that I don't mean that he's singularly the only human being to be like this. However, it's annoying that he is like this because he's a well known public figure, and one whose intellect is barely respected by any intellectual, but massively accepted by college BAs desperate to be deep.

2) I said he regurgitates marxist ideology, didn't say he categorically embraces it. I think it's pretty clear that most of his books, and most of his conversations, revolve around some conflict in the world as seen from a select marxist perspective.

3) Worse yet, all his arguments are dichotomies that need not be; it's usually oppressor vs oppressed, dream vs reality, being awake vs being asleep, etc. If you constantly need to limit, or categorize, every phenomena into solely two options, I'd argue again, that you are the idiot.

4) To be clear again, I don't think he's useless, as I said in my previous post, he has some good ideas and can serve as a gateway into deeper, more nuanced, conversations on certain topics for a lot of people. However, most of what he says should be obvious to just about anybody who has had any sort of formal education on how society and culture works. It isn't anything new, it hasn't ever been.

can someone help me with this one. is dostoevsky completely roasting the author? i thought some of the guy's points about acting irrationally to prove existence made sense... is the reader supposed to feel that the author is doing exactly what he says everyone else is doing - justifying his actions through conscious reasoning? just that the author doesn't recognize the conscious reasoning in himself because his conscious reasoning is the rejection of conscious reasoning? or did i totally miss some ideas?

also, general underground and dostoevsky discussion thread

in gaddis's recognitions he has one character say, "chraaast" constantly, which give him a pretty distinctive voice. what are some other little tricks that do this?

>having a character repeat a specific word or phrase
>giving a character a crutch word
>short vs. long sentences
>vocab level

Any good one?

someone explain this to me - or let me know if it's just an issue of different authors, etc.

While growing up, Medea has already been exiled by Jason. But then later, Theseus joins Jason in the quest for the golden fleece, which means Medea couldn't have been exiled yet.

>one day my friend invites me to his friend's party
>i normally don't go to them since i usually don't know anyone but i say yes
>drive to the house and show up alone
>"anon! what are you doing here?" says one of the few people i know
>around school i'm known as an intellectual/studious type despite the fact i drink/smoke/have sex like any other degenerate
>mill around my friend since the guy bringing the alcohol hasn't come yet
>the guy finally arrives and he turns out to be a really good friend of mine, people are surprised when they see us catching up
>everyone starts taking shots in the kitchen, i go in there and wait
>see qt brunette with dark, deep eyes sitting down texting, doesn't seem like anyone's talking to her
>take 12 shots before i muster the courage to talk to her
>don't remember how but i start dancing with her
>introduce myself
>"Hi, I'm anon. I'm interested in literature and philosophy."
>cringe.jpg
>drunkenly kiss her hand
>tell her she's attractive because she's reserved
>cringe_2.jpg
>to make this all worse she was a designated driver; she was sober this entire time
>don't remember much aside from the fact she left
>i throw up and stay the night, the next day she adds me on facebook
>apologize for hitting on her
>says it's alright, asks if it was true I was into literature
>say yes
>apparently she's into reading and writing
>tfw
>we start messaging each other and eventually she asks to read a short story i told her i'd written while high a week or two ago
>send it to her
>"it's really good"
>all further conversation seems forced
>doesn't seem too interested in talking
>conversation dies out completely
>tfw literary qt turns you down for not being a patrician-tier writer

I ended up running into her once again, but this time was very autistic. I reveal my power level when I'm drunk enough.
