friend lent it to me, said it was the best book he's ever read (he's a creative writing student and he reads quite a lot), i'm about half way through and it's great but not as amazing as he described

One Hundred Years of Solitude

I have never been so emotionally impacted by a book, i was in tears by the end of it. No book has taught me so much about myself.

What's so great about it?

I just started it yesterday and I can't put it down. I wasn't expecting much but I've been blown away. It's a really addictive read.

Next up is either Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close or Billy Budd, Foretopman. All three are assigned reading for the summer.

Any recommendations on which book I should take on next, since I'll probably finish One Hundred Years of Solitude by the Fourth?

It's a great book. I read it in my senior year English class. I was, however, one of only three students that completed the novel. I found that it separated the students who were competent readers and writers, and those who were not. Those who were capable of analyzing and appreciating art, and those who were not (at least not at any great level).

What I am saying, if you have not figured this out for yourself, is that you should complete the book.

It is one of the best novels that I have ever read. It addresses absolutely everything important in life, and contains a lot of really important lessons. It's almost like the Bible in that regard, though in my opinion One Hundred Years of Solitude is better. It is also wonderfully written, even in the translations. I think you should revisit it some time, OP. You might find it to be better than you once thought.

Most people complain about the repetition of names and events and fates in the book, but that is only a superficial issue, akin to complaining about the repetitive use of "so it goes" in Slaughterhouse-Five. If you think the name and time repetition in One Hundred Years of Solitude is unnecessary or excessive, then the point went well over your head.

One Hundred Years of Solitude. A perfect book that summarizes human relationships and morality, while containing warnings against immoral and irresponsible behavior, and sparking creativity and cultural growth with magical and fantastic occurrences. It is informative concerning families and encouraging of scientific discovery and craftsmanship.

Also, it would leave people open to other cultures and lifestyles, but also warn against corporatism, corruption, and war.

More like this please.

For me, the best book to read stoned is One Hundred years of Solitude.

Starting this soon. What should I expect? I haven't read anything else by Marquez and I barely know anything about Latin American culture/history. A friend recommended this to me but provided no background.

Is this a bad idea? If so, where should I start before I delve into this book?
