People say that this book is depressing, but from a determinist standpoint, I found it terrifying. Despite being born into a wealthy aristocratic family, handsome, and intelligent, Yozo still ended up absolutely miserable. Goes to show the extent to which we are slaves to our own minds

This is the driving factor in most book fads. The plebs is satisfied with name-dropping and/or dust jackets on a shelf. In the Ivy League they will silently mark you as a poser if you can't quote anything past the first chapter of a book doesn't matter if you understoodd it though.

Some people have discussed putting two screens on the Kindle so "readers" can show off their dust jacket when in public.

Why is reading in public seen as weird? I was reading my copy of Lolita on bench at a playground near a school (you know, where academics supposedly go) and I got strange looks from a few people, like I was doing something crazy
