No idea what you are talking about but this picture makes me sad. Imagine being the mother. Loosing your husband and your son. Forcing yourself to smile. Letting yourself accept that all of this is really happening and that the only thing you can really do is watch.

Books/idea about being less self-centered. Sort of like the underground man, I'm simultaneously narcissistic and think that I'm smarter than others and deserve money/women/respect, while also being painfully self-conscious and knowing how lame and self-centered and a small man I am.

What are some good books to get out of your head.

Can a code be lit?
I was asking a friend if their programming class was structured much like an English one to learn syntax, and other basics. He didn't really believe that code could be satirical, metaphorical, or ironic enough to really call it such. I don't know too much about coding except do you guys think code can be? I don't know much about coding, but what of some under ground code like macro b. Like for example can this program be considered this?

1 Determine for #4
2 #2 = 2
3 #4 = 4
4 If [[#2 + #2] eq #4] then [#4 = 5]
5 if #4 eq 4 goto 1

>I am a sick man... I am a spiteful man. I am an unpleasant man. I think my liver is diseased. However, I don't know beans about my disease, and I am not sure what is bothering me. I don't treat it and never have, though I respect medicine and doctors. Besides, I am extremely superstitious, let's say sufficiently so to respect medicine. (I am educated enough not to be superstitious, but I am.) No, I refuse to treat it out of spite. You probably will not understand that. Well, but I understand it. Of course I can't explain to you just whom I am annoying in this case by my spite. I am perfectly well aware that I cannot "get even" with the doctors by not consulting them. I know better than anyone that I thereby injure only myself and no one else. But still, if I don't treat it, its is out of spite. My liver is bad, well then-- let it get even worse!

This really stuck with me. I'm someone who definitely has something wrong mentally, to the point that doctors in my family have urged me to speak to a therapist. I go because I respect the field and I know they have the ability to help people like me, but I always end up dropping out after a few sessions. The general feeling of the underground man has toward his liver is my feeling toward whatever lays undiagnosed within me (probably anxiety, though it could also be bipolar given how sudden i can shift from depressive to manic states).

I'm not trying to be edgy tier hurr durr I'm Tyler Durden/Patrick Bateman/Rust Cohle/the Joker tier crap. I don't admire the underground man, I don't think he's cool, but I deeply empathize with him.

What the fuck does that say about me as a person?

You guys think the dominance of preference utilitarianism as opposed to the JS Mill style happiness utilitarianism in modern consequentialist ethics has made Notes from the Underground affectively useless? The whole point in Notes is the Underground Man not rational and is working against what is in his own best interests.

Preference Utilitarianism, to my view, nullifies this. Because preferences are not, always, happiness, the UM is still acting "rationally", only with unorthodox preferences. It makes the whole book a little less powerful, because he's not an undeniable refutation of a rationalist strain of thought common in 19th century russia, he's just a guy that prefers to be miserable in opposition to a philosophy that is slightly wrong, and allows people like the UM to demonstrate its wrongness.
