Nothing, you hit it in the nose; American Psycho was pretty much the result of Mr. Gay Pride Of The Upper East Side being on a boatload of cocaine & feeling alienated by & angry at the yuppie lifestyle he was living in the late 80s/early 90s. Idk that Bateman ever actually kills anyone in the novel, & everything described is just a confession of sadistic hallucinations & fantasies that Ellis was experiencing irl at the time

Pretty sure the couple of decent books he wrote happened by accident or at the very least the fame went to his head to an insane degree. The last couple books as well as any of the other media he works on have his head so far up his own ass its unbelievable.

Does anyone else feel sad for BEE? I really like his books but he lived to see both literature and movies die a slow and timid death. Surely hes too intelligent to really care about the meaning of music videos by random pop stars or think that actors do anything meaningful at all.

Do you like Bret Easton Ellis?

His early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when American Psycho came out in '91, I think he really came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole novel has a clear, crisp brutality, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the prose a big boost. He's been compared to Irvine Welsh, but I think Bret has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humour.
