I just write nervous loner self-inserts thrown into situations outside their comfort zones, confronting traumas or manifestations of mental illness. All the quirks and bad traits are mine, just exaggarated to grotesque degree. Works well for horror fiction. Side characters are mostly written as insults to real life people who wronged me in the past.
