Ok, I'll say it
French people cannot make good literature. They are a one-note piano that only seeks to make you wallow with them in their garbage heap. They are better off genociding themselves in their endless revolutions.

So I meant if you take your chauvinist label seriously then it's good hate-fuel against women. It's one of the greatest novels of all time, considered perfect for a loooong time even by contemporaries who hated Flaubert. It's also psychologically realist so you get to experience btfoing roasties at a sophisticated level. And I'm only being partially facetious. It's in my top 3 classic novels. It's technically perfect, but you have to get a taste for 19th century realism.

A couple of weeks back I posted about my plans to seduce the proprietress of a new indie bookstore in my town. I had just started reading pic related. Since then, I got sick, which delayed my plans, but allowed me to finish the book. I really enjoyed it, but it took the wind out of my sails with the bookshop affair scheme. Basically a "grass isn't always greener" lesson. Our grand romantic fantasies don't pan out that way in reality. You engage in an affair and quickly find yourself just as bored and annoyed as you were in your loveless marriage. Makes me wonder if I should forego the affair and just skip to the part where I [spoiler alert] eat a bunch of arsenic and die a horrible death.

New independent bookstore just opened a couple miles from my house. It is really small and kind of crappy. I don't think it is going to last. Popped in the other day and chatted with the female proprietor for a few minutes. Very plain Jane bookish type, but kind of a milf. I'm planning to pop in maybe once a week to buy a new book. What should I get in order to subtly seduce her?

What should Emma Bovary have done differently? If Charles stopped her reading novels would that have prevented the tragedy? Should she have forced herself to play wife and mother, as she did temporarily, and tried to seek happiness there? Should she have even got married at all? I finished re-reading it just now and while I know what her problem was I'm struggling to think what the solution would be.

I just checked out Madame Bovary and Les Miserables in French and English

I think I'll read Le Mis first, but is Madame Bovary any good? I vaguely remember hearing about it at some point

Are there more french novels with the same themes as Madam Bovary?

I remember reading a book in school when I was a kid about a bored woman who marries then cheats on her man and at some point I think the lover or the husband dies, in the forest (I think) while they're traveling in carriage. I know it's really vague but that's all I can remember. I think it was naturalism or realism so it could be Zola or Flaubert but I looked them up and can't find the same plot.
