I teach an unrelated subject at a university, but my wife teaches high school English. She both loves and hates her job. We live in Texas, so she spends half her time dealing with Mexican kids who disrupt the class because they don't give a fuck about /lit/. Half their family doesn't speak English and they've already decided to work at their uncle's garage for the rest of their lives. Still, admin forces her to go to several taxpayer funded seminars and training session a year designed to teach them all the hot new ways to give brown kids preferential treatment. The scores of ESL (English Second Language) students are counted double when judging the success of the school and they get in trouble if the scores aren't high enough. This forces most teachers to ignore Billy's needs in favor of hopelessly begging Nacho to read Beowulf.
Her level classes are a roll of the dice every year. Might be anything between great and terrible. Her AP classes are where she really gets to shine and give stimulating work, but I get the impression AP students have a stick up their asses and are usually less fun than level kids. The kids vary. In the same year she has cried over how much she'll miss one student and sincerely wished a quick death on another before they rob someone or kill somebody in a DWI.
Your experience is going to be almost 100% dependent on the administration. The only power you have over the kids is what they'll back you up on, so if admin is full of pussies who coddle kids and cave into psycho parents your classes will be daycare sessions that hardly qualify as education. If admin backs you up and doesn't micromanage you to death, it's an extremely rewarding job that'll change your life.
Also, your coworkers are probably retards. People who just happened to wind up teaching are fine, but the ones who aspired to be teachers are usually mongoloids who think of themselves as heroes.

For thousands of years men understood that life itself was labor. They were constantly working to survive, and then to thrive, and if they didn't the cost was very often going to be not making it through the winter. It's only in the very recent past that everyone suddenly got it in their heads life was a pleasure cruise and anything that stood in the way of maximizing your immediate pleasure was an unnatural, rigged game. You can either get a job and play society's game with all the protection and resources society provides, or you can live off the grid and play nature's game, which will demand just as much of you, minus the medicine and Vietnamese stopwatch maintenance forums. There's always a choice. Accept that and be at peace. Everything's fine.

I enjoy this video quite a bit, even if I think Hamlet is the single most overrated piece of literature in human history.
