What unites us is the fact of those particulars, however – the fact that we each have a specific time and place – and the implications of that fact for the nature of our existence. Our lives are open to possibility, but remain eternally bounded by disease, death, and subjugation to social structure. As mutable, limited, social beings, we are all engaged in a massive, cooperative and competitive endeavor.
