Just read through The Old Man and the Sea despite my objections today. It was... pretty damn good. Well written, and quite enjoyable. And it hit a 3.5 FDs on the Feelometer. Since when was Hemingway not an asshole and an idiot? Did reading Farewell to Arms first misrepresent him as a horrible person? If so, what's another good thing by him to read to cement my enjoyment of his work?

Is there a way to read this book as an allegory for grander ideas and concepts other than the words on the page and the things they depict/describe?

I haven't read this book since I was a child and I really loved it then, but I wasn't inclined to any deeper than the words on the page. Looking back on it now, I can't think of any real or insightful way to interpret what goes on in the book.

Could any of you convince me to keep reading this? This fisherman will just not stop talking about his hand cramping up.

Why is this book considered to be one of Hemingway's best? I find it to be a minor work.

I need suggestions of books, preferably series, to listen to on my two hour commute to work.

Go.

We should go ahead and sort Hemingway into Gryffindor.

I think I'm going to start listening to audiobooks on my commute to work.

Recommend some to me (and where I can find them).

I'm thinking about starting with some H.G. Wells or Douglas Adams or even Harry Potter. I want to listen to stuff I've already read.

I'm on the hunt /lit/. I once happened upon a small book shaped like a cube. I do not know its title. What I do know is that it had a lot of writing tips and whatnot and a short story. This story was incredibly short and won a competition of some kind. *spoilers* A man walked into a room and his wife had a shotgun. That's an extremely watered down version. Does anybody have this short story?

The Old Man and the Sea should be considered a short story in my opinion.

Just inherited a bunch of old books, and this one caught my eye. It's one of the youngest in my father's collection in terms of age. I'm about to begin it. What does /lit/ think? What should I know about Hemingway going in to it?

so i had to read "the old man and the sea" last year in school and, i fucking hated this book. there is nothing redeemable about it at all. i'm a big reader too, so the problem isn't that i hate reading.

what does /lit/ think of this?

hello /lit

Should I get The Old Man and The Sea in english or spanish? I read it (and For Whom The Bell Tolls) when I was 14, and they were 2deep4me. I want to reread both, starting with TOMATS. But I've heard that is better in spanish...so what should I do?

A lame attempt to popularize fishing and the killing of animals.

This is plain filth and I can't believe so many people consider it literature
