Im diving too deep and im scared

I'm a native English speaker, and though I have no interest in being a polyglot as I want depth not breadth. Would learning Latin first then French give me the most mileage? My reasoning being that French was the lingua franca before English and before that it was Latin. Giving me access to enough /lit/ for a lifetime.
