I'm currently reading Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, and recently read Ulysses and Infinite Jest. I've noticed that cuckoldry and infidelity (particularly the case of women cheating on men, and/or men going out of their way to seduce married women) is a major theme in all of these books.

Why? Is it to get an emotional reaction, like tense music in a horror movie? Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut is pertinent, there: it is a movie about both anxiety and the sexual politic and more especially anxiety about sex, the insecurity and malicious competitiveness involved in an untrusting relationship even when neither partner ever successfully cheats on the other.

Or maybe it is a simple anti-woman thought, a mysogynistic sort of "all women are lying harlots" type perspective? Or are literary/artist types simply soft pushovers who find themselves more often exposed to such situations, i.e. not just being cheated on but also sticking around despite it and thus holding on to the anxiety of it in that they do not simply abandon their promiscuous wives and loves?

Is it literary to be a cuck?
