Imagine if you've been inundated with foreign fantasy for years, only getting a small drop of native folklore-inspired fantasy in obscure LNs and poorly written novels (which ironically usually have worse prose than those LNs) and then you're treated to something like this? Series like 鵺の陰陽師 and 呪術回戦 are a breath a fresh air for a Japan that's almost always been constantly focused on aping western fantasy. Now the exotic appeal has worn off, and they're hungry for something more familiar. None of this is to say that those more familiar concepts haven't met with great success in the past, but never anywhere near what we're seeing with 呪術回戦 now. Of course, it helps that it has an anime that is usually well drawn and animated, but the ugly ass manga is what pulled people in.
