Because 90% of the stuff that tries to pass itself off as "grimdark" in the market is either edgy teenage fantasy with cruelty basically being practiced for the lulz, or pretend grimdark where the characters whine about how shit everything is and glory in their ruthlesness, but if you look at it closely it's just a game of pretend with an audience that's famished for more ASOIAF. Bakker goes overboard at times (okay, many times) with the darkness, but it's a series written by someone who genuinely knows their shit in terms of history, and has this old-testament/Illiad feeling to its prose that you can't find anywhere else these days.
