All those empires, nations and civilizations were summed up in those terrible creatures. Human-like forms of life whose whole identity is based on a soulless product. Ingrained in the material world, with no mind nor heart. Their religion is materialism and their messiah is vanity, lacking any substance or appreciation for something beyond their Star Wars figures, pop-culture items and video games. Nothing beyond products mean something to them. Consoomers were believed to have once soul, but it left the moment they ingrained in the material world so much that anything in higher plains of existence would be separated by the barrier of the material plain, leaving only an empty flask. In an attempt to fill the gap wherein his soul used to rest the consoomer will devour any form of popular media that lacks any substance or value in order to feel complete.
