In the movie "Amélie" there's a character of a failed writer whose book ("Narcisse dilettante") has the following synopsis : "sotry of a guy who writes his diary, but instrad of writing gradually what's happenin, he writes the catastrophic version of what could happen to him. So he gets freaks out and does nothing".

Now when he tells this story this is played off as a comedy to emphasize the fact that it comes off as cerebral and boring, but I was wondering if there is a way someone could take this idea and make something really good out of it ? Or are there premices that are inherently flawed ?

I feel a girl would be too taken aback if I just approached her and said, "I noticed you admiring my devilishly good looks."
I want them to feel they have a better reason for checking me out.
What's the book equivalent of this?
