Jesus doesn't tell everyone to do that, just the rich young man. He doesn't tell Zaccheus to sell all his possessions, for example.

The point of that parable is not that you absolutely have to sell all your possessions, but you need to be prepared to if that's what Christ asks of you. Nothing in your life should be more important than your devotion to Christ. He asks different things of different people, but whatever he asks for, you must be prepared to do out of your love for him.
