Conflict is a component of life, not its meaning. Even achievement, the end result of successful conflict, provides only shallow relief, as you've implied. The struggle of the fly in the marmalade is an inescapable part of human life, and we learn to crave the waves to savor their cresting vistas, but at the core, what we really want is the preservation of all that is good in our lives - for perfect love, joy, hope, and every pleasant and pure thing to eternally crest in our hearts without waning. We crave boundless satiety. We desire beauty and excitement in unending supply, and for this we throw ourselves upon the waves of conflict time and again, because, in this mortal world, there are no eternities, only continuities, yet the fulfillment of this drive for eternal essences does find its fulfilment, but not in Man and not in the mortal world. It is only in Christ. He is the door, and the destination. The spotless Lamb of Jacob, in he is the weight of glory of which only shadows exist in our art and fable.
