Since War & Peace was written before Tolstoy's mid-life crisis and conversion, would the aspect of Pierre's search for the meaning of life be nullified? Consider he is basically a stand-in for Tolstoy himself. I can imagine he thought of both War and Peace as well as Anna Karenina in negative terms after his complete conversion.
