Thinkin of sorta folding the Odyssey into the Forever War.

Basic structure is dude leaves where hes from and joins space military to go fight Aliens who launched a surprise bombing of part of earth
MC would go fight for several years, and transport to and from the worlds hes fighting on takes decades, during which soldiers are frozen.

He gets back after a brutal war to find the impact that the earlier surprise attack had on Earth. Surveillance state has been established, no one is allowed out after dark, etc. To quell people from rebelling due to this, the government instituted a policy in which they put chemicals/hormones into food and water to make people smaller, weaker, and more timid. Automation has taken affect, as has an increased population, thus UBI and assigned housing are a thing which means where the MC worked is completely automated, his home was seized by the government through eminent domain and converted into apartment blocks. Everyone he knew that didn't go to fight is long dead

Thanks to the automation, cheap goods are available so UBI works, and people rarely leave their apartments as they can order whatever they need and use electronics 24/7.

Due to all the previously mentioned things, returning veterans are noticeably different than their new earth counterparts. They are larger, more aggressive, etc kinda how Odysseus and other Trojan War veterans were on a whole different level compared to the suitors.

Obviously this would lead to issues as the ex soldiers don't like being told what to do and don't like that they've lost the homes they left, the people they knew, etc. Government will crack down, declaring soldiers mentally unfit for society and lock them up.

Pretty rough outline, will need a lot of work. Seem to be able to come up with ideas for stories but have issues finishing them and coming up with endings

/lit/ likes this book right?

My question is, when the government starts to encourage homosexual relationships like in the book to quell the male citizenry, will the incel problem be solved (cured)?

The Forever War. It sucked. I read Neuromancer right before it and it just can't compare.
