These got me fucked up

Basically it begins with some kind of fight, and then after that all this crazy shit starts happening to the narrator throughout the novel, then at the end you find out it was all a hallucination brought on by some kind of drug, and the book ends back where it started with the fight. Sorry this is a terrible description but I read it like 20 years ago and have forgotten almost all the details but it stuck with me and I want to read it again.

What's the best dictionary out there? I'm a person who believes in the power of a well-built vocabulary, and was considering buying a dictionary-thesaurus combo. But dictionaries nowadays have so many nonsense words put into them that don't really mean anything, so is there a particular year's edition of the dictionary that /lit/ can reccomend? Perhaps something older?
