14. THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS

"— We shall creep out quietly into the butler's pantry —" cried the Mole.
"— with our pistols and swords and sticks —" shouted the Rat.
"— and rush in upon them," said Badger.
"— and whack 'em, and whack 'em, and whack 'em!" cried the Toad in ecstasy, running round and round the room, and jumping over the chairs.

"You say it is the good cause that hallows even war? I tell you: it is the good war that hallows every cause."
— Ibid.

I didn't read this book as a child, I read it for the first time a couple of years ago at 24 years of age.

Although I absolutely loved it, especially the short story chapters Dolce Domum and Piper at the gates of dawn, I'm sad I missed out reading this as a child while I was filled with positivity and wonder.

Did you read this book when you were young? Did it bring you joy?

The Kitty chapters are definitely the weakest, and adding a third POV spoiled the Bartimaeus-Nathaniel dichotomy that the first book nailed perfectly.

Why is everyone in this book being kind of a dick to each other all the time?

They instantly laugh it off and go back to being best friends (they all start being the most bestest friends real fast too) but there is still this air of everyone being kind of a cunt

Pic related. It's got that comfy old-world prose that makes me think of warm spring days and comfy dinners
