Something everyone should do before they die is read Understanding Media, by Marshall Mcluhan. This will make you feel so goddamn big brain your head will spin.

He starts with written language overtaking the spoken word. In ancient civilisations only nobles, scribes, and priests could read. Also some cultures have alphabets with like 1000s of symbols, or use picture letters, which is not efficient.
The Romans trained soldiers to read an efficient language, which gave them massive superiority in organisation and planning over the rest of the Europeans with tribal type oral traditions. The power and influence of media has been the core of civilisation ever since.
Understanding how media works then allows you to see the flow of human progress like nothing else.

This guy predicted the internet 30 years before it took hold, saying a form of media that encompasses all other forms of media will have to appear and connect the world.

Mcluhan always gets a bonus for being an incredibly well read essayist, which means that you learn from him an impressive reading list and a rough guide to the creative reading of important texts
