I vastly prefer the NRSV. It's in modern English, a team from Oxford assembled it from several different sources, they explain the context and background of everything, it's cross-referenced heavily, and it's free on archive.org. What more could you possibly want?

I chose to read the NRSV. It was put together by a team of experts from Oxford University, drawing together every source they could get their hands on. It's free to download on archive.org, also.

Has a LOT of commentary and cross-references. Also available for free on archive.org!

It doesn't have the same writing style. The commentary in the NRSV explains how scholars have identified four different authors in the Pentateuch alone, based on differences in writing style. Picrel is available for free on archive.org, also. Maybe you should pull your head out of your ass.

Much more than a mere KJV dictionary.

I highly recommend this one instead.
It's written in modern English, it's assembled from several different sources by a team of experts, and it's explained and cross-referenced thoroughly.
Plus, it's free to download on archive.org .

I prefer picrel. It's written in modern English, plus it's got more history, supplementary info, and cross-references than you can shake a stick at.
It's also free to download on archive.org!

You could also try the book section in thrift stores.

You can't go wrong with the most schizo book ever written.
And this one is in modern English, is assembled from several ancient sources in an attempt to make it as accurate as possible, and has tons of cross-references and explanatory material.
TL;DR: If you follow God's rules, you will be rewarded with military victories and much plunder, cattle, and slaves. If you don't follow God's rules, you and your tribe will wander in the wilderness until the guilty generation dies off.

I recommend the NRSV.
It was assembled by a team from the plethora of ancient sources, with an eye toward the most accurate version they could manage.
It's written in modern English, plus it's got lots of commentary and cross-references.
It's free on archive.org too!

If you're going to read it, pick up a modern translation.
I'm presently reading the New Revised Standard Version.
It's got more historical and explanatory material you could ever hope for, plus it's heavily footnoted and cross-referenced.
It's free on archive.org, also.

I'm personally a fan of the New Revised Standard Version.
It was assembled by a cross-functional team at Oxford University, pulling from as many sources as they could (Hebrew, Greek, KJV, etc.), trying to put together the most accurate version they could.
Has an epic amount of commentary, especially on their sources.
It's also free on archive.org.

Seems like normal practice.
Lately I've been getting inspired big-time from reading the Bible, as well as the book "Understanding World Religions: An Interdisciplinary Approach" by Irving Hexham.
Mythology is just religion that has fallen out of favor, anyway.

I'm currently reading this.
Not only is it in modern English, but a team of scholars have done their best to create the most accurate Bible they can from the several sources (e.g. Latin, Greek, Hebrew, apocrypha, etc.).
It's filled with explanatory material and cross-references.
It's also free on archive.org .

Depends on which version you're reading.
I found the NRSV to be easy to understand.
Also, I'm going to guess you haven't gotten to the really weird parts yet.

You think YOU have it bad.
Three of my ideas for novels would benefit greatly if I could finish reading picrel.
Damn thing is 2,440 pages.
I'm up to page 231.

I personally recommend the New Revised Standard Version. See picrel.
It's got a lot of commentary and cross-references, i.e. it's considered a "study bible".
It's free on archive.org, too.
