The future of the 90s came to pass and people realized that technology and anti-establishment sentiment don't mix. Either that or they didn't realize anything and got distracted by the "counter-culture" on Twitter and Facebook. You can't use the internet to fight corporations and the government because they're the ones who own and operate it all. You can't fight the system with technology because technology IS the system. "Cyberpunk" doesn't make any sense, even as a theoretical concept separated from historical reality. The idea of combining Cybernetics and Punk is totally absurd if you think about it for more than a couple minutes.
If this sounds cliched it's because it's true and many people have said it before.

Gravity’s Rainbow, All Quiet on the Western Front, 100 Years of Solitude, Suttree

I probably shouldn’t tell this story, but once I witnessed a man sneak past the library falcon with a stolen book. Now, this happened on tuna Wednesday and the falcon was being fed his tuna while my friend was in the philosophy section and was checking out The Ego and It’s Own. He slipped it under his arm and walked over the the library hotdog stand while another friend (we’ll call him Friend B) bumped into him and made Friend A drop the book. This drew the attention of the falcon away from his tuna as a third friend (Friend C) snuck a copy of Kant’s 2nd critique past the falcon desk and through the front door. Upon hearing the book alarm the falcon started to chase Friend C while we ran out the door with our stolen book.
When the falcon caught friend C, he showed the falcon the cameras and the falcon understood that it was just a prank. Or so he thought.

Gravity’s Rainbow is one of the most unadaptable books I’ve ever read because of the writing style and becuase of the content. The wiring style is one of the main reasons it’s such a good book, Pynchon is the best author that I’ve read when it comes to disorienting and exciting you when reading his prose. The content is equally important as the prose becuase often Pynchon will break off into philosophical musings about rocket equations, or about black rocket engineers, or about sex, or about magic, or about anything really; his writing is really what makes the book what it is.

Gravity’s Rainbow is less of a coherent story and more of a sacrifice in the name of the gods of prose, philosophy, and literature
