My appreciation for Yudkowski has increased significantly since I read his Harry Potter fanfic. It is fun and gives you a much better picture of life than I thought the likes of Yudkowski were capable of seeing (not to speak of expressing).

You could certainly say your sense of judgment is skewed.

>Herodotus

Herodotus is a piece of shit, Plutarch is a much better choice. Alternatively, if you don´t feel like reading the Greeks, pick Jacob Burckhardt´s The Greeks and Greek Civilization.

>people think typos have anything to do with intelligence
Typos are not non-standard language usage like slang. Typos are sloppiness.

One´s words are the medium in which one presents your thoughts. Typos reflect the inadequate attention one has paid to the presentation of his argument. Furthermore it is likely that if one has not paid sufficient attention to a comparatively simple manner that is the correct linguistic presentation of one´s thoughts, insufficient attention has also been paid to the thoughts themselves.

And conversely, no typos indicate concentration and care on the part of the writer.

My favourite is this one

>4. Mark Twain on Jane Austen (1898)

“I haven’t any right to criticize books, and I don’t do it except when I hate them. I often want to criticize Jane Austen, but her books madden me so that I can’t conceal my frenzy from the reader; and therefore I have to stop every time I begin. Every time I read ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ I want to dig her up and hit her over the skull with her own shin-bone.”

Yes and no. It's in turn brilliant and horrifying maybe less for its story but rather to see the (talented) author himself dedicate his life to it as "his work." I believe you can read the first page of it and have a pretty good idea of whether you'll like it or not. Find a copy to read browse before getting it.

ITT: Books /lit/ spoiled for you.

Just scrolling down the page, when I momentarily see a pic of the book, as well as the words:"The Game did it"
