Don't trust guides. Those things are written by charlatans.

The best creative writing class I ever took (and I've taken a bunch) was Journalism 101. Read the newspaper, read the NY Times, read a style guide -- journalism is storytelling stripped down to its basic components. If you can do that, repeatedly, demonstrably well, then you have the software to tell made-up stories well. And then study poetry, film, comics, other prose writers, take them apart until you're unable to enjoy them as a fucking audience member (it's a bummer, but it's a necessary part of getting good, and besides, it'll make you appreciate the unreplicateable geniuses more), and take the component parts back to your own writing and use what you can to build your own Frankenstein monster of a style.

Then, if the stars line up, you'll have something like an original voice.

Hope I don't come across as a know-it-all dick, honestly, just hoping to impart whatever I've managed to cobble together during my time in obscurity.

Oh, yeah, and the best advice I ever got: the best cure for writer's block is a trip to the library. Research is your best friend. Always be doing research. Always.
