Hey /lit/

I'm looking for some pulpy goodness. I've read some James Sallis, Richard Starks, Brett Halliday and this gem by Jerry Stahl. Any suggestions of more authors or specific books?

Also, do you have any opinion on hardboiled pulp type stuff? I notice they always ask literary authors if they read Raymond Chandler but never really ask Raymond Chandler who he reads which I think would be more interesting.

Don't hang out with the other creative writing creeps. You'll hate them all except maybe for one or two. Typically, there will be a chick who adores and if your lucky one or two people who you get along with. You're all competing to be the best writer no matter what feel good artsy 'we're all trying to do the same thing' bullshit they try to espouse. Not to mention you're all probably millennials who suck the teet of whatever authority figure you have. Major publishing will continue to work out of the MFA programs and they will just be publishing the same bullshit again and again. Like another poster said, they can't afford to take chances. Would you rather pick someone up from the minor leagues or the sandlot? But again, traditional publishing is on the way out, anyway. I'd take advantage of the system right now if I were you and see how far you can get before it goes to shit. If nothing else, you'll learn how to edit other people's work effectively which is a good skill to have.

Pic relate: Oh right, you can build your reputation through another field as well like working for television or having success in some other field. Just so they can put something credible on the dust jacket and promotions other than 'He's read a lot of books and is a talented writer.'

Probably Drive by James Sallis. You'd probably like Palahniuk, too. Sorry, this is subject is outside of my normal reading interest so a lot what I suggest have movies associated with them. L.A. Confidential has a lot of well laid schemes.

My ultimate suggestion will be Plainclothes Naked by Jerry Stahl. He's a cop, but a very bad one and he's laying out plans and making everyone look silly throughout the whole book. Very graphic and funny. The guy has written for CSI and major literary magazines alike. I now step out.
