So nearly 2000 years later, what's the verdict on this chap and which book has the most exhaustive take on him?

God exists, and yet the fact we do not see him is a perfectly valid reason to doubt his existence. Christianity is the only religion that explains why God exists but apparently chooses to hide himself (so to speak) from his own creation.

This is because fundamentally God wants to see men and how they act if they think they aren't being actively watched over. It's not exactly a test of your character if you don't cheat on your wife if she's staring at you right there, any more than it would be a test of your character if you literally saw some irate man in the clouds staring you down every time you were about to sin.
