Romance is almost entirely catered to delusional women who think they'll be noticed by the gigachad CEO or "Alpha" Male.
Even rape novels where women are captured and tortured spin it in the light of favorable "enlightenment" typically with the idea "I can fix him".
Women are retarded.
Romance for men is rarely done.
I got into Romance from Stephanie Meyer's gender bent Twilight novel.
I loved it immensely but would have preferred if she omitted like 90% of her bullshit vampire history shit near the end. It was unnecessary.
But if you're into more sexual novels unfortunately all men get is fucking Harem shit.
It's a tragedy. Men get absolutely fucked when it comes to selection of decent Romance. It's easy to please females since their entire lives are about rejecting objective reason and reality for romantic notions.
So I suppose in the end it boils down to you just really digging around for the right book.
Men are not the majority of readers today.
The literature sphere is female dominated hence how something so fucking shit like Fifty shades would get so god damn popular and profitable. It's complete literary diarrhea but it proves my points perfectly.

So I showed a good friend of mine my book so far and he told me my Protag is an obnoxious asshole (Also said it was a self-insert) which kinda stung but I could see where he was coming from.

I've been mulling over what he was telling me about how readers will likely put it down before they get to the point where he starts to change for the better or grow as a person throughout the book.
On one hand I could completely re-work his character and take the book into another direction but on the other I kind of want to finish where I'm going with this original version.
Admittedly It's only 7 chapters along and I could definitely start over without much trouble but I'd like to get some opinions about it.
In hindsight it seems like he's absolutely right in that a protagonist who is easily hated is not popular.
He also said my writing is boring and lacks engagement. I'm totally fine agreeing with him on that because I literally just started.

What would be the sensible thing to do? Do I go ahead and start over or would it be better to keep going if nothing else just for the practice of finishing a book?

Yes. Teen pregnancy in a society with high marriage rates isn't bad. Today although the rates might be lower the negative impact is far greater. Single mothers raising children improperly by virtue of having the paternal figure missing. This negative feedback loop will just keep on growing.
Not to mention many people I've talked to that have led a promiscuous sex life eventually come to the conclusion that it's hollow, meaningless. More and more it's becoming the only option since the commodification of sex and a far more promiscuous society eliminates the effect that oxytocin has post-sex in binding a couple.
Take this effect out and people stick together less, divorce rates go up, marriage rates go down, soon enough the concept of having a life partner will be a thing of the past.
Get me out.

If philosophy has to rest on an arbitrary foundation, what should the foundation be?
