He's getting into philosophy, dropping into Hume and the greats isn't the way in, and don't try to appeal to institutions as intrinsicaly more valuable guides. First of all he isn't doing a philosophy course so your list is almost irrelevant, and secondly I am a Philosophy Graduate working on my masters, with a fair amount of personal experience of subject introduction.
