Is this book supposed to make the reader feel like an American Psycho™? There is a never ending onslaught of names, clothing, gadgets, restaurants, horrible sounding dishes, disjointed drug fueled conversation, psychotic outbursts, horrific visceral murder. But there is no rise and fall, no buildup, no crescendo - the only respite the reader enjoys is the temporary shift in focus, a new outlet for the narrators obsessive mental chatter. I feel like I am being punished. Patrick wants to drag me down with him into the torment of ceaseless hallucination. I am only on 250 out of 450 pages. How can this continue for 450 pages? Why does it need to?

I started reading American Psycho because I like the movie, but the book is written in this really weird way. I think its stream of consciousness, but it's so strange.
Am I literally too stupid for this book?
