What books have you read that /lit/ hates? How did it end, did you come to hate it as well or was it surprisingly enjoyable?

So everyone gave up and we can agree this book is unreadable trash and why he killed himself?

Is this book worth finishing? I have about 160 pages left but I feel like these last chapters that DFW has spelled out for me that he thinks it's literally shit and a bunch of pointless information. I'm beginning to agree with that. Is this why he killed himself? Realized he wrote himself into a corner in an unendurable and pointless book with no way to fix it? I already skipped chapter 23 because it seemed unendurable. is it just more of the same for the rest of the book? Good god man.

Is this worth reading or is it just depressingly unfinished? I don’t want to fall into something that makes me sad for being unresolved (I understand non-resolution is somewhat a DFW theme but that literally is the case in this instance)

How do we know it was unfinished with the way DFW writes?

How is The Pale King so good but Infinite Jest so bad?

I was really enjoying this book at the beginning, but now that I am more than a halfway through it I started seeing it just as a more elaborate YA book. Even worse, this description applies now on my opninion on his Lobster book, even on IJ, which I dropped being third of the way till end.

So this one is better than IJ? It's going to be publish in portuguese, it's been 2 or 3 years of translating. But I'm interested. You guys meme alot about IJ.

How does /lit/ feel about unfinished novels? Is it worth reading them even though they were unfinished?

In the case of DFW, he actually arranged the manuscript so it would easily be found, and he had to know it was going to be published. Does that make The Pale King "finished" in the sense that DFW didn't have anything else to add?

Was New Sincerity the precursor to the alt-right? Think about it. Ironism is the best liberal, multicultural position. No worldview is inherently superior. Everything I do, then, I do knowing that another way may be superior, and since there are an infinite number of other ways, probably there is one which is superior but I may not be able to recognize it due to the limits of my knowledge. Everything I do is tentative due to this realization.

The New Sincerity was a reaction against the emptiness and hopelessness of the ironic position. How are people supposed to live if there's no way to tell if anything they do is "right"? The response: Whatever I do, I must do with full confidence, since I need to choose to do something even if there are limits to my knowledge. The things I choose are what I've decided is right for me, and maybe not for others, but I can only act on the knowledge available to me. I can only advocate for my own position and for people like me.

I've just finished pic related and I think it's his best work, much better and more mature than IJ. The Chris Fogle chapter is along with Good Old Neon the best thing I've ever read by Wallace and maybe even among the best things I've ever read in general. When he spoke about his father and discovered that he might have been not as stiff and empty as he always imagined him to be I nearly cried. I swear. I'm Writer
Immediately after I've finished the book, I read the notes DFW left and it's too sad that he couldn't finish it, especially the relationship between Meredith Rand, her husband and this autist could have become extremely interesting.

What were your favorite chapters and how did you like the book? And can anyone tell me 1) what this paranormal levitating and phantom shit was about and 2) who this grumpy and sad kid in the look back in chapter 23 was?

Is Pale King worth reading for someone who liked Infinite Jest? The whole unfinished nature has me sort of skeptical, but on the other hand Infinite Jest can barley be called 'finished' itself.

Hey /lit/, I'm a pretty big DFW fan, but I haven't read The Pale King yet. I've been putting it off because it is incomplete.

Is it still fulfilling despite not being complete?

I still think I am destined for greatness and glory, even though I'm anxious and afraid of almost everything.
